Reclaimed wood especially adds a charm as it has its own history and a story to tell within each of its fibers! Coming from barns, factories or other industrial buildings, it is guaranteed to completely transform a space. Learn how you can create character in your own with the use of these three techniques.
  1. Ceiling Beams: Exposed beams along the length of ceilings are gaining in popularity and have always been admired by homeowners and architects. They are also a great way to change the contrast of a room when you use dark beams in a light living space or vice versa. Beam’s linear design can create a clean space that aligns with hardwood floors. It can even look great going against the lines of the ceilings. They can go in other shapes too, for instance a few single beams that create an area such a living room, or can lead someone’s eye to look into a certain area. Understanding the Differences in Denver Hardwood Floor Finishes

Understanding the Differences in Denver Hardwood Floor Finishes
Hardwood floors have become the floor of choice for homeowners everywhere. They are preferred for their durability, ease of care, and versatility when decorating. It wasn’t long ago that having a hardwood floor meant having a traditional light oak floor. Today floors come in every color of the rainbow, custom hand scraping can create any ambiance you are seeking, and many different types of wood are being used with the focus on not only looks but sustainability. Ward Hardwood Flooring also has a large selection of the most sustainable and eco-friendly choice of all, reclaimed wood, not only for flooring, but beams and accents as well. For your particular home it is not only important to choose the correct type of wood but Wood Flooring Finishes Make a Difference as well.

Custom Hand Scraping is Different From Distressing
Our artisans can apply a variety of hand scraping techniques to your floors to add an element of country chic or urban edginess to your space. Distressed floors merely look like they have additional wear and tear, whereas truly hand crafted, scraped floors can have band saw, wire brush chatter, and sander markings, giving your loft an industrial vibe. Pillowing and edge scraping can add some texture and distinction giving our space the look of a 100 year old farmhouse. If you’re going for more of a unique, European Provincial look, we can apply custom stenciling as well. We can even add some wormholes if you’re so inclined!

Finishing Treatments
One of the reasons that hardwood floors have become so popular is that they are easy to take care of and don’t need harsh chemicals or special equipment to clean them. For longevity and to eliminate the need for re-coating, it is important that the correct type of finish is applied. There are basically three types of finishing coats: oil based, water based, and wax based.
  • Wax was the most popular coating 50 or 60 years ago. It is used today but not as often. It gives the look of uncoated wood and is very quick to absorb. We don’t find this is the best option for most of our customers today. There are other choices that last longer and are easier to maintain.
  • Water based coating is quick drying, allowing customers to walk on their floors in a short time. They are also low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) and are considered extremely environmentally safe. They are extremely durable but periodic recoating may be necessary, especially in high traffic areas.
  • Our recommendation to most of our customers is the hardy oil based finishes. They give wood a hand rubbed look and really allow the depth of texture and color of the wood to show through. They are also more water tight for maximum durability and ease of care.
If you’re overwhelmed by the choices of hardwood finishes, wood types, and hand scraping options available, don’t be. Call us at 303-674-6966 today. We will come out and assess your space and make suggestions about how to create just the look you’re after whether it’s having new floors installed or refinishing your existing floors.

Sustainable Hardwood Floors for Your Colorado Home

July 27, 2016

Sustainable Hardwood Floors for Your Colorado Home
The beauty of hardwood floors is timeless! Wood building materials are some of the most environmentally friendly resources available. Any hardwood floor showroom will offer a wide variety of sustainable woods. Many of the most sustainable and eco-friendly, such as bamboo have become very popular in recent years with growing concern over climate change and our disappearing rainforests. Any hardwood floor showroom is likely to carry a wide variety of these green materials. We also carry several wood flooring options that don’t just have a small environmental footprint, they have no footprint because they are reclaimed from structures that were torn down or remodeled with other materials. Our hardwood experts at Ward Hardwood Flooring can go over many options with you including using reclaimed wood for floors and wood accents.

Environmental Benefits
According to the Arbor Day Foundation, the Values of Trees to a Community cannot be overstated. The U.S. Department of agriculture estimates that one acre of trees can absorb 6 tons of carbon dioxide and produce 4 tons of oxygen annually. This is enough oxygen for 18 people. Trees also help regulate climate and water usage as well as provide homes for a wide array of birds, animals, insects, and other plants. Diminishing natural resources and deforestation are two of the most important environmental concerns today. Builders are moving to using more sustainable materials, but nothing is more environmentally friendly than keeping building supplies out of the landfill and giving them renewed life in a new structure. Wood from mature trees is often required for flooring or other building projects. The more mature trees we can leave in the ground, the greater the long-term environmental benefits.

Building Benefits
Reclaimed wood is often more durable than recently harvested stock. It has likely been in used for decades, if not centuries, allowing it to expand, contract, and fully dry out. This makes it less prone to splitting or warping. As wood ages, its grain also becomes denser, making it more stable. Wood harvested from antique buildings was likely obtained from virgin timber of a quality that is no longer available today. Not only is it beautiful, this is also some of the most cost effective flooring on the market today.

Style Benefits
Reclaimed wood is likely to give your home or business a distinct flavor that is both old world and chic at the same time. Many materials are no longer available today because they have been over-harvested and take too long to grow to be sustainable. Each plank has its own character and story to tell with depth and character unlike any you would be able to find in a lumber yard today.

Our inventory of reclaimed wood is some of the finest in the state. Our woods score very highly on the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) scale and are guaranteed to last a lifetime as well as turn heads. We have flooring and wood accents to add charm and distinction to any home or work space. Call us at 303-674-6966 to set up a design consultation today!

Environmentally-Conscious Denver Hardwood Flooring

Environmentally-Conscious Denver Hardwood Flooring
Do you love the look of hardwood floors but worry about the effects the lumber industry has on the environment? There is a unique, cost-effective, and environmentally-friendly option available to people who would like hardwood flooring in Colorado. The flooring we’re thinking of comes in a unique hue, with splashes of blue and red throughout the wood.

Beetle Kill Blue Pine provides a rustic look, with unique coloring and natural knots. There are several reasons Beetle Kill Pine is a great choice for those who are thinking about hardwood floor installation.

For one thing, Beetle Kill Pine flooring comes from trees that were dead prior to harvesting. The beetles and subsequent fungal infections caused the trees to die naturally. Choosing this type of wood is a good alternative to other pines if you are against the waste of natural resources like forest trees. Using Beetle Kill Pine in home furnishings has been seen as a rebirth for the dead wood, inspiring homeowners and craftsmen to liven up their furnishings with a wood that stands out more than your typical white pine does.

The blue hue provides a unique look for your home that can’t be manufactured. It is a great way to introduce color into your home without needing paint or artificial stains. Beetle Kill Blue Pine is just as durable as any other pine, because it is only the outer layers of the tree that are damaged by the beetles. The fungus that causes the blue coloring does not damage the wood itself. If you choose Beetle Kill Pine, you do not have to worry about poor quality simply because the tree was dead prior to harvesting.

Not only does Beetle Kill Pine make fantastic flooring, but it also makes great furniture. Get a coordinated look throughout your home by buying home furnishings that will compliment your new floor. Items made from this wood usually have a more shabby chic look, and it is perfect for all kinds of homes that want a more quaint and creative living space.

There are several different finishing options for Beetle Kill Blue Pine that will enhance the natural color of the wood rather than cover it up. This will allow you to really showcase the beauty of your new wood flooring. Ward Hardwood Flooring offers a variety of finishing treatments that will give you the glowing, rustic look that you have always dreamed of.
